Leeds 1 Swindon 0

Coca-Cola League One

RESULT: Leeds United 1 Swindon Town 0

Leeds scorer: Beckford 86

On this weekend 40 years ago, Swindon were winning the League Cup and on their way to Division 2. Leeds were marching towards the Division 1 title.

How times have changed. And it will only be the Leeds United supporters who can possibly dream of a return to former glory tonight.

Town undone again by a late goal that leaves them in desperate trouble at the bottom end of League One.

An 86th minute header from Jermaine Beckford providing the killer blow that left Swindon with nothing to show from what had been a spirited afternoon's work.

Michael Timlin in the Town midfield typifying a battling attitude that frustrated a promotion-chasing Leeds side, who ran out of ideas after starting very brightly.

The first-half a story of wasted chances for the home side, with Phil Smith - in for the dropped Peter Brezovan - saving Swindon on more than one occasion.

The second period far more scrappy, where Swindon held firm and even carved out the odd opportunity for Simon Cox and the hardworking Billy Paynter.

But just as Town reorganised to safeguard what looked like a certain point, a lack of concentration from a corner let in Beckford to snatch a dramatic, quite cruel winner.

Another goal in the dying minutes for manager Danny Wilson to lament.

"We worked so hard and then got undone right at the end," the bitterly disappointed Town manager commented.

"We were fantastic out there at times and we've come away with nothing because of a lack of character at a crucial stage. The job was almost done.

"Southend on Tuesday is now a huge game for us. We must bounce back from today and quickly."
